"Adeline" is an American reel in cut time and A Dorian/Mixolydian. The parts are played AB. It was in the repertoire of Luther Strong (1892-1962), a fiddler from Hazard, Perry County, southeastern Kentucky, from the Harlen/Hayden region. He was recorded in the field in 1937 for the Library of Congress by Alan and Elizabeth Lomax. Luther Strong (1892-1962) woke up in jail on October 18, 1937. He had been arrested on a charge of public drunkenness and had spent the night in the Hazard, Kentucky lockup. Earlier that day, Alan Lomax who, along with his wife, Elizabeth, was in the final weeks of a two-month trip to eastern Kentucky collecting songs and tunes for the Library of Congress. When he found that Luther was in jail, he drove into Hazard, where he bailed Luther out of jail. Luther then sent Lomax out for a pint of whiskey to get the session underway. As his hangover lessened and using a borrowed fiddle, Luther played twenty-nine tunes, a virtuoso survey of Southern fiddle repertory. This version is a composite of several online versions. The tune was printed in Clare Milliner & Walt Koken's Milliner-Koken Collection of American Fiddle Tunes (2011). It was recorded for Library of Congress by Luther Strong (1937) and Coole, Showman, Gross, Kilianski and Allison on Adeline.
