It is known in central and southwestern Pennylvania.
Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable (1894) gives that 'box the fox' means to rob an orchard, i.e. steal apples, in Britain and Ireland.
It was collected from Issac Morris in Greene County, Pa.in the 1930's by Samuel Bayard.
It was printed in Bayard's Dance to the Fiddle (1981).
