"Butler County", also known as "Perry's Victory" is an American jig or march in G and 6/8<br> time. It was known in Southwestern Pa. The parts are played AABB.<br> Primarily by virtue of the alternate title "Perry's Victory", Bayard dates it to the late<br> 18th century. Commodore Perry being the commander who was victorious against the British in<br> the Battle of Lake Erie (1813).<br> Why a tune known as "Perry's Victory", played by a Greene County fifer should be known as<br> "Butler County" is unknown to me.<br> Bayard suggests the tune bears a resemblance to the Irish "O Southern Breeze" and is<br> generally similar to "The Men of Garvagh" and "The Black Dance".<br> It was adapted from a manuscript by fifer Thomas Hoge in Greene County, Pa. in 1944.<br> It was printed in Bayard's Dance to the Fiddle (1981).<br>
