"By the Waterfall" is an American reel in D Major. The parts are played AABB.
It comes from
the playing of West Virginia fiddler Israel Welch who may have picked the tune up while
he was stationed in Newfoundland.
It’s a bit of an obscure tune as there are only a couple recordings of it.
The first is featured on Israel’s album, Tearin’ Down the Laurel which is still
available through the Augusta Heritage Center in CD form.
Israel Welch was born on October 7, 1912 in Burlington, WV in a large family with ten children.
Four of the brothers and one cousin formed the Welch Brothers Band and played extensively for
dances in the 1930's. Three of them, including Israel, were stationed at various places
during WWII. When his ability became known Israel ended up entertaining the troops and
playing for dances in Newfoundland. He died August 29, 2003.
The banjo tablature is by John Letscher.
It was printed in Lamancusa's The Gettysburg Collection of Old-Time Fiddle Tunes (2021).
