"Camp Chase" is an old-time breakdown tune from West Viginia. It is usually played on the
fiddle in AEae or GDgd tuning.
There is a story that this song was played by a Confederate soldier in a prison camp fiddle contest to win his freedom. It was printed in Krassen's Masters of Old Time Fiddling (1983), Brody's Fiddler’s Fakebook (1983) and Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes (1994). It was recorded by The Fuzzy Mountain String Band and Adam Hurt. Most people play it at normal reel speed. Adam Hurt plays it a little slower and it sounds very nice. The midi file included here is the slower tempo. |
