"Carrolltown Breakdown", also known as "Silver Lake" is an American reel in G Major. The parts are played AB. Bayard thought the tune (“highly popular in Pennsylvania”) to be a derivative of "Buffalo Gals". The rhythm is somewhat irregular for dancing but traditional fiddlers sometimes play unexpected holds when playing solo and not accompanying dancing. Although some fiddlers refer to this tune as "Silver Lake", the usual name for the tune in Pennsylvania is "Carrolltown Breakdown" with the name "Silver Lake" usually referring to another tune. This tune was collected from James Taylor,a fiddler from West Virginia & Greene County, Pennsylvania in the 1930's by Samuel Bayard. Mr. Taylor played it with a dotted rhythm like a hornpipe. It was printed in Bayard's Dance to the Fiddle (1981).
