"Chase the Squirrel", also known as "The Maid That Dare Not Tell" is an American reel
known in southwestern Pa. in D Major. The parts are played ABA.
The title is a floating one and this tune Bayard (1981) identifies as a composite made from combining or fusing strains from other tunes. The 'A' part is very similar to the morris tune "Shepherd's Hey". I find that the A part brings to mind "Old Molly Hare". Bayard finds some similarities, especially in the 'A' part, to "The Eighth of January" in Ford's Traditional Music in America (1944). It was collected from George Strosnider, an elderly fiddler from Greene County, Pa. in the 1930's by Samuel Bayard. The banjo arrangement is by John Letscher. His version is played AABB. It was printed in Bayard's Dance to the Fiddle (1981). |
