"Cuffy" (also known as "Cuffey" is an old-time reel in G Major.
The parts are played AB (Silberberg) or AABB (Brody).
It is from southwestern Va. or western North Carolina.
The name "Cuffy" has a long history in America as a slave name,
especially on the minstrel stage where it was regularly employed by
blackface dancers and musicians. In fact the name Cuffy
(Cuffey, Cuffee) derives from the language of the Ewe tribe
from the Volta region of Ghana, in west Africa, who's custom
it is to name a child after the day of the week it is born on.
Thus, Cuffey is the English derivation from Kofi, the name
given to boys born on a Friday.
The banjo tablature is by John Letscher.
It was printed in Brody's Fiddler's Fakebook (1983),
Kuntz's Private Collection,
Silberberg's Tunes I Learned at Tractor Tavern (2002) and
Songer's Portland Collection (1997).
It was recorded by Fennig's All-Star String Band on Fennigmania (1981),
Highwoods String Band on No. 3 Special (1976) and
Rattle on the Stovepipe on 8 More Miles (2005).
I learned this at our local jam.
