"Cuffy" (also known as "Cuffey" is an old-time reel in G Major.<br> The parts are played AB (Silberberg) or AABB (Brody).<br> It is from southwestern Va. or western North Carolina.<br> The name "Cuffy" has a long history in America as a slave name,<br> especially on the minstrel stage where it was regularly employed by<br> blackface dancers and musicians. In fact the name Cuffy<br> (Cuffey, Cuffee) derives from the language of the Ewe tribe<br> from the Volta region of Ghana, in west Africa, who's custom<br> it is to name a child after the day of the week it is born on.<br> Thus, Cuffey is the English derivation from Kofi, the name<br> given to boys born on a Friday.<br> The banjo tablature is by John Letscher.<br> It was printed in Brody's Fiddler's Fakebook (1983),<br> Kuntz's Private Collection,<br> Silberberg's Tunes I Learned at Tractor Tavern (2002) and<br> Songer's Portland Collection (1997).<br> It was recorded by Fennig's All-Star String Band on Fennigmania (1981),<br> Highwoods String Band on No. 3 Special (1976) and<br> Rattle on the Stovepipe on 8 More Miles (2005).<br> I learned this at our local jam.<br>
