"Durang's Hornpipe" is an old-time hornpipe, reel or breakdown in
D Major (most versions) or G Major (Riley). It is played in standard or
ADae fiddle tunings. The parts are played AABB (most versions),
AABB' (Emmerson, Kerr) or AA'BB' (Moylan).
The tune is associated with John Durang (1/6/1768 – 3/31/1822) who was the first native-born American to become known as a dancer. Said to be George Washington's favorite performer, he was famous for dancing the hornpipe, a lively, jiglike solo exhibition. The banjo tablature is by John Letscher. It was printed in Adam's Old Time Fiddlers' Favorite Barn Dance Tunes (1928), Bayard's Dance to the Fiddle (1981), Bégin's Fiddle Music in the Ottawa Valley (1985), A.S. Bowman's J.W.
