"Dust in the Lane", also known as "Cotton Pickin' Time" is an old-time
American breakdown in A minor and A Dorian. The parts are played AABBCCD.
It is related to the "Paddy on the Turnpike"/"Falls of Richmond" family of
tunes and is a very Irish-sounding.
It was collected by Marion Thede from W. R. Newman of Waldron, Arkansas.
He sang these words to the third strain:
Betcha forty dollars I can pick a bale o' cotton,
Betcha more than that I can pick it in a year;
For me an' my farmer's friend
Can pick more cotton than a gin can gin.
The banjo tablature is by John Letscher.
It was printed in Thede's The Fiddle Book (1967) and
Lamancusa's The Gettysburg Collection of Old-Time Fiddle Tunes (2021).
It was recorded by James Bryan & Carl Jones on Cricket's Lullaby (2011).
