"Going to Jail" is an American country rag in cut time in G Major (Brody, Phillips) or<br> C Major (New Lost City Ramblers). The parts are played ABB (Brody) or AA'BB' (Phillips).<br> It is a ragtime fiddle piece composed around the E, A, D, G chord turn, attributed to<br> Muhlenberg County, Kentucky fiddler Ted Gossett (1904-1990). It was one of six sides<br> Gossett's band recorded for Gennett Records in September, 1930 and fiddler Tom<br> Whitmer (b. 1886) replaced Gossett for this number. Confusingly, Tom Whitmer's Band<br> also recorded three sides for Gennett on the same day, featuring fiddler Whitmer playing<br> with the same personnel as Gossett's band - Enos Gossett (guitar), Pete Woods (banjo)<br> and Earl Nossinger (guitar).<br> "Going to Jail", credited to the group's pseudonym 'Buddy Young's Kentuckians' on the<br> record label, was issued only on the poorly distributed Gennett subsidiary, Superior<br> Records. The New Lost City Rambler's version is modeled after the version played by<br> Tennessee's Fiddlin' Arthur Smith.<br> It was printed in Brody's Fiddler's Fakebook (1983) and<br> Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes, vol. 2 (1995).<br> It was recorded by Ted Gosset's Band on Old Time String Band Classics: 1927-1933 (1975),<br> New Lost City Ramblers on String Band Instrumentals (1964),<br> Buddy Young's Kentuckians (a.k.a. Ted Gossett's Band) (78 RPM) and<br> Tom Whitmer (with Ted Gosset's Band) on Kentucky Mountain Music vol. 3 (2003)<br> (Originally recorded 1930).<br>
