"Granny Will Your Dog Bite?", also known as "Camptown Hornpipe" or "Congo Prince Jig" is an American march or reel in 2/4 time. It is known in southwestern Pa.in D Major. The parts are played AABB.
"Granny Will Your Dog Bite?" seems to be a floating title that appears many times over.
Bayard collected several sets of the tune, often as untitled reels. He traced sets of the tune to Elias Howe's Diamond School for the Violin (c. 1867). "Congo Prince Jig", from Thomas Briggs' 1855 Banjo Instructor, is an alternate title, perhaps denoting minstrel origins.
It was collected from Hiram Horner (fifer from Westmoreland and Fayette Counties, Pa.) in 1961 by Samuel Bayard.
It was printed in Bayard's Dance to the Fiddle (1981) and Hopkins' American Veteran Fifer (1905).
