"Green Corn", also known as "Hot Corn, Cold Corn" is an old-time breakdown in A Mixolydian.
It is often played in ADae fiddle tuning.
The tune was recorded for the Library of Congress by
musicologist/folklorist Vance Randolph from Ozark Mountain fiddlers in the early 1940's.
John Hartford (2001) says, "Dr. Gray played
this on the fiddle and the banjo, and Dough Dillard says this is the first tune he learned
to pick on the banjo." Dr. Jimmy Gray played the fiddle in contests in the great Jefferson
City radio fiddle conventions.
It was printed in Rice's Correct Method for Banjo (1858),
Milliner and Koken's Milliner-Koken Collection of American Fiddle Tunes (2011) and
Old Time Fiddling From The State Of West Virginia
It was recorded by Harvey Sampson and the Big Possum String Band on Flat Foot in the
Ashes (1986/1994) and
John Hartford on Hamilton Ironworks (2001).
