"Greene County", also known as "The Irish Volunteer" or "The Baltimore March"
is an American march in 2/4 time and D Major. The parts are played AB.
It is a standard fife tune in southwestern Pa. although it is in a different key from the other related tunes and this version was played slowly and deliberately instead of the more lively time of "The Irish Volunteer" versions. Greene County is the county on the southwestern corner of Pennsylvania adjoining West Virginia. The source for the notated version was Samuel Palmer. It was collected from him by Samuel Bayard in Fayette County, Pa. in 1944. It was printed in Bayard's Dance to the Fiddle (1981). |
