"Hawks and Eagles" is an American reel in 4/4 or cut time and D Major (Brody,
Silberberg) or G Major (Spadaro). The parts are played AABB. It is played in standard,
ADad or ADae fiddle tunings.
The source for this tune is fiddler Norman Edmonds (1889-1976) and the Old Timers
from Hillsville, southwest Virginia.
The A and B parts are very similar but the B part is often played an octave lower.
The banjo tablature is by John Letscher who says "It comes from The Highwoods String Band
and a really nice video of Walt Koken and Claire Milliner. It should really be just one
part repeated 4 times, but there's a different sound to the B part."
It was printed in Brody's Fiddler's Fakebook (1983) and
Banjo Picker's Fakebook (1985),
Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes, vol. 2 (1995),
Silberberg's Tunes I Learned at Tractor Tavern (2002),
Spadaro's 10 Cents a Dance (1980).
It was recorded by Norman Edmonds on Train on the Island (1973) and
Norman Edmonds and the Old Timers, vol. 2 (2004),
Michaels, McCreesh & Campbell on The Host of the Air (1980),
The Highwoods String Band on Dance All Night (1975) and others.
