"Kanawha March" is an American march in cut time and D Major (Phillips), G Major ('A' part) & D Major ('B' part) (Silberberg) or D Major ('A' part) & G Major ('B' part) (Lamancusa). The parts are played one part (Phillips), AB (Silberberg) or A1 A2 B A2 (Lamancusa). This is a local West Virginia tune recorded for the Brunswick label by Kanawha County fiddler Clark Kessinger (1896-1975) in the late 1920's. Although the tune does not move above the A above the treble staff, some of the double stops require the fiddle player to shift up to third position,
The tune is unusual in several ways. There are measures of 3/2 and passages of half notes and whole notes that are different from most traditional fiddle tunes.
It was printed in Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes, vol. 2 (1995), Silberberg's Tunes I Learned at Tractor Tavern (2002) and Lamancusa's The Gettysburg Collection of Old-Time Fiddle Tunes (2021),
It was recorded on Brunswick 238 (78 RPM) by the Kessinger Brothers (1928).
