"Lamplighter's Hornpipe" is a New England tune also known as
"The Five Mile Chase" and in one instance is called "Lady Walpole's
Reel" although most versions of that are very different.
In Quebec it is known as "Reel à quatre". It is usually played in
G major but sometimes appears in A major.
I ran across this tune (as "Lady Walpole's Reel") in Good Morning, a book of contra dance tunes and instructions published by Henry Ford in 1943. After a lot of digging, I found that "Lady Walpole's Reel" is usually a quite different tune. I haven't found a recording of it under either title. "The Lamplighter's Hornpipe" was printed in Cole's 1000 Fiddle Tunes (1940) and, as banjo tab, in Perlman's Melodic Clawhammer Banjo (1979). The banjo tab is from Hank Sapoznik via Ken Perlman's book. |
