"Magpie" is an American reel in cut or 2/4 time known in North Carolina (Piedmont
region in G Major. The parts are played AB (Silberberg) or AABB (Brody, Kaufman).
It was collected by Alan Jabbour in 1966 for the Library of Congress from fiddle/banjo
duo Harlan Coble and William Alonzo "Lonnie" Corsbie in Guilford County, north-central
N.C.). It was also collected by Eric Olson, Bobbie and Tommy Thompson in 1968.
Tom Carter collected a D Major version from Piedmont fiddler Earl
Shatterly. The tune was very popular among young old-time musicians in the "revival"
of the 1970's.

It was printed in Brody's Fiddler's Fakebook (1983),
Kaufman's Beginning Old Time Fiddle (1977),
Silberberg's Tunes I Learned at Tractor Tavern (2002) and
Songer's Portland Collection, vol. 2 (2005).
It was recorded by Ken Perlman & Alan Jabbour on Southern Summits,
Wry Straw on From Earth to Heaven (1978),
