"The Mason-Dixon Schottische", also known as "California Dance," "California Hornpipe",
"Limber Neck Blues," "The Nightingale", "Peacock Rag", "Rustic Dance", "Rustic Hornpipe" or
"Starlight Clog" is an American schottische in C Major or D Major. The parts are played
AA'BB'.
The tune is a member of the large "Rustic Dance" tune family, wherein the first strain is
the dominant part, sometime attached to different second strains. "Mason-Dixon Schottische"
mirrors "Rustic Dance's" two strains closely both harmonically and melodically, with the
most differentiation in the second strain melody.
It was collected from Marion Yoders in Greene County, Pa. (1961), Walter Neal in
Armstrong County, Pa. (1952) and Wilber Neal in Jefferson County (1948) by Samuel Bayard.
It was printed in Bayard's Dance to the Fiddle (1981).
