"Meeting of the Waters" is a Scottish (originally), Canadian and American march in
4/4 time known in New England, Canada and Prince Edward Island in A Major (most
versions) or D Major (Martin, Perlman). The parts are played One part (Martin), AB
(Laufman, Miller & Perron, Sweet), AABB (Perlman), AA'BB' (Songer) or AA'AA'BB'BB'
(Phillips).
The tune was, in past years, a staple at New England contra dances when grand
marches were in vogue.
It was printed in Laufman's Okay, Let's Try a Contra (1973),
Martin's Ceol na Fidhle, vol. 4 (1991),
Miller & Perron's New England Fiddlers Repertoire (1983),
Perlman's The Fiddle Music of Prince Edward Island (1996),
Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes, vol. 2 (1995),
Songer's Portland Collection vol. 2 (2005) and
Sweet's Fifer's Delight (1965/1981).
It was recorded by The Canterbury Country Orchestra on New England Chestnuts 2
(1981) and
Fireside String Band on Square Dance Tunes For a Yankee Caller.
