"Metsäkukkia", also known as "Flowers of the Forest", "Forest Flower Waltz" or "Woodland Flowers" is a Finnish waltz in G Minor (Matthiesen) or A Minor (Johnson). The parts are played AABBCC (Johnson) or AA'BB'CC' (Matthiesen).
This is a very popular tune in Finland (where it is an accordion standard), imported to the United States in the Scandinavian communities of the northern states. The waltz was picked up and popularized by American contra-dance musicians. It is known in northern Wisconsin and Massachusetts.
It was printed in Johnson's The Kitchen Musician's No. 7: Michigan Tunes (1986-87) and Matthiesen's The Waltz Book (1995).
It was recorded by Viljo Vesterinen (1931) (78 RPM), Yankee Ingenuity on Heatin' Up the Hall (1989) and Boys of the Lough on Sweet Rural Shade (1988) (as "Forest Flower").
