"Old Cow Crossing the Road", also known as "Old Cow Crossed the Road"
is an American country rag or polka in C Major ('A' part) & F Major ('B' part).
The piece seems to have derived from a song tune and is associated with western Virginia
(Galax) and northwestern N.C. fiddlers. A tune by this name was in the repertoire of Galax,
Virginia, fiddler Herbert Higgins in the 1930's, later recorded by Bert Edwards of
Mt. Airy, N.C..
Samuel Bayard's Pennsylvania-collected
"The Old Cow Crossed the Road"
is a close variant
as is the New York-collected "Pop Weir Tune".
It was printed in Lamancusa's The Gettysburg Collection of Old-Time Fiddle Tunes (2021).
It was recorded by Kirk Sutphin on Fiddlin' Around (1993),
The Lundy Family on Back in Galax Again (1992),
The New Southern Cowtippers on Old Bell Cow (2006) and
Bert Edwards on Bert's Bambaree: Old-time Fiddle Pieces (c. 1988).
