"Pretty Little Dog", also known as "Little Dog" is an American reel in cut time and A Dorian.
It is played in AEae or Standard fiddle tuning. The parts are played ABCD (Brody) or AABB
(Johnson, Phillips).
The source for the tune is West Virginia fiddler Lee Triplett, who says he fashioned
it in the process of learning another tune from fiddler Doc White of Ivydale, W.Va.
The tune is often played at a somewhat slower tempo than the fast breakdown speed.
The banjo tablature is by John Letscher who based it on the playing of the Fuzzy Mountain
String Band.
It was printed in Brody's Fiddler’s Fakebook (1983) and
Banjo Picker's Fakebook (1985),
Johnson's The Kitchen Musician: Occasional Collection of Old-Timey Fiddle Tunes for
Hammer Dulcimer, Fiddle, etc., No. 2 (1982, revised 1988, 2003),
Krassen's Clawhammer Banjo (1974) and
Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes, vol. 2 (1995).
It was recorded by Fuzzy Mountain String Band on Fuzzy Mountain String Band (1972),
Bruce Hutton on Old-Time Music - It's All Around (1978),
Lost World String Band on Lost But Not Least (1978),
Mill Run Dulcimer Band on Sunday at the Mill (1980),
Foghorn Stringband on Rattlesnake Tidal Wave (2003) and
Critton Hollow Stringband on Poor Boy (1979).
