I think I got the basic banjo version from Alec Slater's banjo book. I don't remember where I learned the other versions. The lyrics, sung in any order, are the type that can be thrown in to amuse the band while playing the many repetitions necessary to complete the dance figures. It was printed in Brody's Fiddler’s Fakebook (1983), R.P. Christeson's Old Time Fiddler’s Repertory, vol. 1 (1973), Slater's Clawhammer Banjo Solos (1979), Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes, vol. 2 (1995). It was recorded by John “Dad” Crockett on Mountain Fiddle Music, vol. 2 (originally recorded 1928), Crockett's Kentucky Mountaineers on Kentucky Mountain Music vol 4 (2003), John Cohen on Stories the Crow Told Me (1998), John Burke and the Yankee Carpetbaggers on Old Fashioned Dance Music (1968), John McCutcheon on The Wind That Shakes the Barley (1977), Tracy Schwartz et al on Pickin' Around the Cookstove (1975), Kretzner and Leibovitz on Dulcimer Fair (1981), Dirk Powell & Tom Sauber on One Eyed Dog (1993) and others. |
