"Sal's Got Mud Between Her Toes", also known as "Sally's got Mud between Her Toes" or
"Sallie's got Mud between Her Toes" is an American reel in cut time and D Major.
It is played in ADae or standard fiddle tuning. The parts are played ABBC or ABC
(Silberberg).
The tune is sourced to southern Kentucky fiddler Pat Kingery, whom collector
and fiddler Bruce Greene recorded in the field in 1976. On that recording Kingery did not
sing words, but later told Greene that these words were sung to the tune:
Here comes Sally down the road,
She's got mud between her toes,
Though her face is pretty as a pear,
She's got a yellow ribbon in her hair.
The banjo tablature is by John Letscher. His comment:
From the playing ofJoe Newberry.
Pat Kingery was known to never play the tune the same way twice.
It was printed in Silberberg's Tunes I Learned at Tractor Tavern (2002) and
Lamancusa's The Gettysburg Collection of Old-Time Fiddle Tunes (2021).
It was recorded by Bruce Greene & Hilary Dirlam on Fiddler's Dozen (1994),
Tarheel Hotshots on Young Fogies, vol. II (1995) and
Greg Clarke on Home Recordings - October 2001 (2001).
