"Shaking Down the Acorns", also known as "Shaking Off the Acorns" is an American reel in cut or 2/4 time and A Mixolydian. The parts are played AB, AABB or AA'BB. This tune is from Pocahontas County, West Virginia, fiddler Burl Hammons (-1993) who used ADae tuning and said his tune came from his uncle Nige Cogar, who lived near the Hammons family when Burl was young. It was also in the repertoire of Burl's uncle Edden Hammons (1876-1955) who called the piece "Shaking off the Acorns" and who also played it in ADae tuning. He was recorded playing the tune by folklorist Louis Watson Chappell in 1947. The banjo tablature is by John Letscher. It was printed in The Devil's Box vol. 31, No. 4, Winter 1997, Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes, vol. 1 (1994) and Songer's Portland Collection vol. 3 (2015).
