"Shelvin' Rock" is a title used for a number of tunes (related or not). The various versions are played in various keys. It was collected from a number of players including Henry Reed by Alan Jabbour, Adam Smitley (an elderly fiddler from Fayette County, Pa.) by Samuel Bayard, Ernie Carpenter, Edden Hammons and Burl Hammons (this version).
This version was recorded by Burl Hammons on Old Time Music of Pocahontas County (1995) and Orpheus Supertones on Bound To Have A Little Fun! (2004).
The banjo tab is from John Letscher who credits the Orpheus Supertones as his source. The tune is crooked, having eight measures in one part and six measures in the other part. Burl Hammons played the six-measure part first followed by the eight-measure part. John reverses the order.
