"Shippingport", also known as "Shippin' Sport", "Shipping Port" or "Shippinport" is an<br> American reel in cut time and G major. The parts are played AA'BB' (most versions) or<br> AA'BB'CC (Kelly Gilbert).<br> Shippingport was an island in the Ohio River at Louisville and was a French enclave until<br> the mid 19th century. It was acquired by the United States as part of the Louisiana<br> Purchase of 1803.<br> Field recordings made by John Harrod include versions by<br> John Masters (Fayette County, Kentucky) (1980s),<br> (Masters reports learning this tune from African American fiddler Jim Booker),<br> Kelly Gilbert (Franklin County, Kentucky) (1981) and<br> Jim Woodward with guitar accompaniment by Ray Stipe (Jessamine County, Kentucky) (1980).<br> The field recordings are played very fast. The version notated here is from the recording<br> of James Bryan and was played at a much slower pace.<br> It was recorded by Fiddlin' Doc Roberts (1928) (as "Shippin' Sport"),<br> Jimmy Johnson's String Band (1932) (as "Shipping Port"),<br> James Bryan on First of May (1986) (as "Shipping Port"),<br> Burl Hammons on Old-Time Music of Pocahontas County - The Fiddling of Burl Hammons<br> (The Diller Collection - Volume I) (1995),<br> Reed Island Rounders on Goin' Back (2002) and<br> Rafe Stefanini & David Bragger on Holy Smoke!
