"Shove That Pig's Foot a Little Further in the Fire", also known as "Push that Pig’s Foot a Little Further in the Fire", "Push that Pig’s Foot Closer to the Fire" is an American reel in cut time and G Major. It is known in western North Carolina The parts are played AB (Silberberg) or AABB (Phillips, Songer). This is one of my favorite tune names. It's also a fun tune to play. A ‘pig’s foot’ is a blacksmith’s tool that somewhat resembles a crowbar or poker, used to manipulate pieces of pig iron in a forge. The tune was originally recorded by western North Carolina fiddler Martin Marcus on an LP where he played it as a duet with his son Wayne. Marcus also recorded for the Library of Congress in the 1940's. It was printed in Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes, vol. 1 (1994), Silberberg's Tunes I Learned at Tractor Taven (2002), Songer's Portland Collection (1997). It was recorded Marcus Martin on Old Timey Fiddle Music by the Legendary Fiddler Marcus Martin (1973) and Bruce Molsky on Big Hoedown (1997). I learned it from Mac Benford at Midwest Banjo Camp.
