"The Smuggler’s Reel" is an American reel in 2/4 time and A Major. The parts are played AABB. It is related to the Scottish "The Irish Hautboy", "The Irish Hautboy" and the Irish "Lisdoonvarna Reel", "The Rose in the Garden", "The Primrose Girl" and "Tadhg a Rúin". It is an American title for a reel with an Irish provenance. For some reason this tune is often listed as an alternate name for "The Old Grey Cat" although the tunes are very different. It was printed in Cole's 1000 Fiddle Tunes (1940) and Ryan’s Mammoth Collection (1883).
