"The Soap Fat Man" is a southwestern PA version of Dan Emmett's "Old Dan Tucker".
It was collected from John Tustin in Rogersville, Greene County, PA. in 1944 by Samuel
Bayard.
It was recorded by Tamsula and Withers on Behind the Door (2016).
The banjo arrangement is by John Letscher from that recording. The recording is in Bb but John
worked out the banjo version in D. He says that, like on the recording, this tune goes well
with "Jim Harbst's Tune" in a medley. Tustin's version was in C.
The tune was printed in Bayard's Dance to the Fiddle (1981).
The melody is listed in Dance to the Fiddle as "Old Dan Tucker".
