"Somebody’s Buried in the Graveyard" is an American reel in G Major and cut time.
The parts are played AABB.
People have learned this tune from the Canotes’ string band class. They credit it to Street Butler (1904–1977, Kentucky) by way of Bruce Greene, but the tune as they play it is pretty significantly different from the 1976 field recording Greene made of Butler. In the field recording, Butler sings some lyrics which may connect the tune to an African-American spiritual song, putting it in a different context. Butler’s lyrics are: Somebody's buried in the graveyard, Somebody's buried in the sea, Going to get up in the morning a shouting, Going to join jubilee. The banjo tablature is by John Letscher who says: This is from the Canotes via Bruce Greene. It's a bit notier than the Street Butler version. Both can be heard on YouTube. |
