"Susan Lick the Ladle", also known as "Darkey Under the Woodpile", "O Little Girl what<br> Makes You Look So Clever" or "Girl that Looks So Clever O!" is an American reel in<br> 4/4 time and G Major. The parts are played AABB.<br> Bayard was convinced of the tunes apparent 'Scottishness' but was unable to trace the<br> melody to old country collections. He does note "some faint general likeness" to the<br> British <br> "The Irish Hautboy".<br> The title compares with the Scottish tune name "Lick the Ladle, Sandy", but there is<br> no musical resemblance.<br> The sources for the notated version was Frank Lowry, a fiddler from Fayette County, Pa. in<br> 1944, Samuel Losch, a fiddler from Juniata County, Pa. in the 1930's and George<br> Strosnider, an elderly fiddler from Greene County, Pa. in 1928).<br> It was printed in Bayard's Dance to the Fiddle (1981).<br>
