"Twinkle, Twinkle" also known as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and "Twinkle
Star, Twinkle, Twinkle" is an old-time, bluegrass or Texas style Breakdown
known in Texas aand Missouri in G Major. The parts are played AB (Brody,
Christeson) or AABB (Phillips).
This version of the melody is similar, in general, to the original song “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Stars or Meet Me at the Bars” (1879) by Fred MacEvoy. Byron Berline says that he learned it from his father who learned from a recording of Arthur Smith. Atypically for traditional tunes, the B part contains four measures that require a shift to 4th position on the fiddle. It was printed in Brody's Fiddler’s Fakebook (1983), R.P. Christeson's Old Time Fiddlers Repertory, vol. 2 (1984), Ford's Traditional Music in America (1940) and Phillips' Fiddlecase Tunebook (1989). It was recorded by Loyd Wanzer on You Be the Judge, Paul Warren on America's Greatest Breakdown Fiddle Player, Lonnie Robertson (Mo.), c. 1965-66, Kenny Baker on Kenny Baker Country, The Dillards with Byron Berline on Pickin' and Fiddlin', Curly Ray Cline on Clinch Mountain Boy Jailed, Richard Greene on Duets, Benny Martin on Big Daddy of the Fiddle and Bow and Benny and Jerry Thomasson on A Jam Session. |
