"Witch of the Wave", also known as "Witch of the Wake" is an American and Scottish reel. Like some tunes called "cotillions" ("Richmond Cotillion" is a good example), the A part is in one key and the B part modulates to the relative dominant, in this case G Major ('A' part) & D Major ('B' part). The parts are played ABB (Kerr) or AABB (Cole, Phillips, Sweet). The Witch of the Waves was the name of a famous American clipper ship, built in 1851 for the China trade. An extreme clipper ship of 1,498 tons, she was built by George Raynes, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, at a cost of $80,000 and sported a figurehead of a female figure in flowing white garments. In 1851, she sailed from Calcutta to Boston in 81 days, setting a record. In 1855 she was sold to owners in Amsterdam and was renamed Electra. She remained with the Dutch owners until 1886. It was printed in Cole's 1000 Fiddle Tunes (1940), Kerr's Merry Melodies, Vol. 3, Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes, Vol. 1 (1994), Ryan’s Mammoth Collection (1883) and Sweet's Fifer’s Delight (1965).
