"Farewell to the Creeks" is a Scottish pipe march and jig in D Major.
It is a well-known north country tune composed by Pipe Major James 'Pipie' Robertson of Boyne, Banffshire in 1919 when he had rejoined the 1st Battalion after his experiences as a prisoner of war from 1914-1918. The title is based on the creeks and inlets of the Banff-Portsoy coastline in Banffshire in north east Scotland where Robertson was born. It is the tune for Hamish Henderson's popular song "The Highland Division's Farewell to Sicily" also called "Banks of Sicily", composed while he was Intelligence Officer for the Highland Division in World War II. "Farewell To the Creeks" was printed in Hinds/Hebert's Grumbling Old Woman (1981). It was recorded by Alistair Anderson on Traditional Tunes (1976), Will Atkinson (et al) on Ranting and Reeling: Dance Music of the north of England (1998). |
