"Banks of the Ohio" is similar to
"Omie Wise"
but this song does not relate to any known case
in either America or England.
The verses and chorus are sung to the same melody. This is a different tune than the old-time reel by the same name. It was recorded a number of times on old 78s by Grayson & Whitter, The Piedmont Log Rollers, Clarence Green, the Monroe Brothers and others. It was more recently recorded by The New Lost City Ramblers and became popular in the urban folk scene of the 1960's & 70's. I learned it from the recording of The New Lost City Ramblers, NLCR Volume 2. |
