"Sweet Betsy from Pike" is an American ballad about a migration from a Pike
County (probably Missouri) to California. This Gold Rush-era song, with lyrics
written by John A. Stone before 1858, was collected and published in Carl
Sandburg's 1927 American Songbag. It was recorded by Burl Ives on his debut
album Wayfaring Stranger. The melody is the English tune
"Villikins and His Dinah",
which is also used for the Irish partisan song
"The Old Orange Flute",
the Irish War of Independence song
"The Bold Black and Tans"
and the bawdy song
"The Thrashing Machine".
It is related to the jig tune
"Paddy Whack".
It was recorded by Oscar Brand, Bob Gibson, Cisco Houston, Johnny Cash, Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton, The Limeliters, The New Christy Minstrels and others. |
