"Durang's Hornpipe" is an old-time hornpipe, reel or breakdown in
D Major (most versions) or G Major (Riley). It is played in standard or
ADae fiddle tunings. The parts are played AABB (most versions),
AABB' (Emmerson, Kerr) or AA'BB' (Moylan).
The tune is associated with John Durang (1/6/1768 – 3/31/1822) who
was the first native-born American to become known as a dancer.
Said to be George Washington's favorite performer, he was famous for dancing
the hornpipe, a lively, jiglike solo exhibition.
