"The Irish Volunteer", also known as "The Baltimore March" or "Greene County"
is an American march in 2/4 time and G Major. The parts are played AABB.
This is one of the standard tunes in the fifer's repertoire in southwestern Pennsylvania. This version was collected from the manuscript Real Fife Tunes compiled by Thomas J. Hoge from the playing of western Pennsylvania fifers. Bayard collected another version from The Mount Pleasant Tablatures, handwritten notations used the Mount Pleasant fife band members, written by band leader James S. Braddock. He collected three other versions from players in the area. This march is played at a faster pace than the related march "Greene County". It was printed in Bayard's Dance to the Fiddle (1981). |
