"The Old Man and Old Woman Scoldin'" is an American air in 2/4 time and D Major. The parts
are played A (slow tempo), BB (fast tempo).
Bayard (1944) states that tunes with titles similar to this and with the same programmatic idea (i.e. a slow part for the old man, a quick one for the old woman) have long been known in both British and American folk music repertoires. This tune is an old western Pennsylvania fifer's march revised to fit the 'Old Man and Woman' pattern: it is a shortened form of "Governor King's March". An example of the traditional tune for this type of tune is "The Growling Old Man, Grumbling Old Woman" which is also in this section. It was collected by Samuel Bayard from Sarah Armstrong on November 18th, 1943. It was printed in Bayard's Hill Country Tunes (1944). |
