"Rose in the Mountain" is an old time American breakdown from Kentucky in D Major.
It is a “crooked” tune from the Salyer Family. Jeff Titon (2001) is of the opinion the
tune might have once been a march, although John Salyer played it as a breakdown.
Titon finds the first part of “Rose on the Mountain,” published by Knauff in 1839
is related (however, it is not related to J.P. Fraley’s
“Wild Rose of the Mountain”).
Source for notated versions: John M. Salyer (Salyersville, Magoffin County, Ky.).
The banjo tablature is by John Letscher. His notes:
This is Salyer's version. Adam Hurt does a slightly more lyrical version.
It was printed in Phillips's Traditional American Fiddle Tunes (1995) and
Titon's Old Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes (2001).
It was recorded by John M. Salyer in the Berea College Appalachian Center Recordings and
Adam Hurt on his Artifacts CD.
