"Shaking Down the Acorns", also known as "Shaking Off the Acorns" is an
American reel in cut, 2/4 or 4/4 time and A Mixolydian. The parts are played AB, AABB or AA'BB.
A version of the tune was from Pocahontas County, West Virginia, fiddler Burl Hammons (-1993)
who used ADae tuning and said his tune came from his uncle Nige Cogar, who lived near the
Hammons family when Burl was young.
It was also in the repertoire
of Burl's uncle Edden Hammons (1876-1955) who called the piece "Shaking off the Acorns" and who also
played it in ADae tuning. He was recorded playing the tune by folklorist Louis Watson Chappell in
1947.
The banjo tablature is by John Letscher.
It was printed in
It was recorded by
Ruthie Dornfeld on Duets Abroad (2010),
Ånon Egeland, Arto Järvelä & Bruce Molsky on Rauland Rambles (2016),
Edden Hammons on West Virginia University's The Edden Hammons Collection vol. 1 (1999) and
Adam Hurt on Fine Times At Our House (2012).
