"The Tempest", also known as "Ap Shenkin", "The Dear Little Island", "Even and Odd Like Tom with His Hod" or "Mississippi" is an English and American jig known in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine in G Major (most versions) or C Major (Howe/Accordion). The parts are played AABA. Although this not the same tune as the English contra dance of the same name, it is linked with a country dance in New England, perhaps the one performed at the 150th anniversary celebration of the town of Lancaster, New Hampshire, in August, 1914. Howe (c. 1867) printed dance instructions with the tune, which was included in his section of Contra Dances. The title appears in a list of the repertoire of Maine fiddler Mellie Dunham. The elderly Dunham was Henry Ford's champion fiddler in the late 1920's. It was printed in Cole's 1000 Fiddle Tunes (1940), Howe's First Part of the Musician's Companion (1842), Howe's Complete Preceptor for the Accordion (1843), Howe's School for the Violin (1851), Howe's Diamond School for the Violin (1861), Howe's 1000 Jigs and Reels (c. 1867), Kennedy's Fiddlers Tune Book, vol. 1 (1951), Kerr's Merry Melodies vol. 3 (c. 1880's), Linscott's Folk Songs of Old New England (1939), Miller & Perron's New England Fiddlers Repertoire (1983), Raven's English Country Dance Tunes (1984), Ryan’s Mammoth Collection (1883), Sweet's Fifer’s Delight (1965/1981), White's Excelsior Collection (1907). It was recorded by Mellie Dunham, 1926 (appears as "Boston Fancy" {the name of a dance}).
