"Valley Forge" is an American reel in cut time and D Major/Mixolydian (most versions) or A Major.
It is played in standard fiddle tuning or AEae tuning (A Major version). The parts are played
ABC (Silberberg), AA'AA"BB'CC' (Phillips) or AA'BC (this version).
The tune comes from Jimmie Driftwood who learned “Valley Forge”
from fiddler Absie Morrison, whose repertoire contained numerous
pieces named for events in American history. Where Morrison
obtained the tune, or if the title "Valley Forge" is his own, is unknown.
The banjo tablature is by John Letscher. His comments:
Mixture of Gettysburg Jam, Lukas Poole and several Youtube videos.
This one just grew on me.
It was printed in Beisswenger & McCann's Ozarks Fiddle Music (2008),
Lamancusa's The Gettysburg Collection of Old-Time Fiddle Tunes (2021),
Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes, vol. 1 ( 1994) and
Silberberg's Tunes I Learned at Tractor Tavern (2002).
It was recorded by Ramona Jones on Back Porch Fiddlin’ (1973),
Ramona and Mark Jones on Women of Old Time Music (1980) and
The Ill-Mo Boys on The Marimac Anthology: Deep in Old-Time Music (1996).
