"Wide Awake Reel" is an American reel in A Major. The parts are played AABB.
It is possibly modeled on the Irish tune
"Young Arthur Daly".
There was a clipper ship named "Wide Awake", recorded in American Clipper Ships 1833-1858 by Howe and Matthews. The title is more likely associated with the 'Wide Awakes', an American paramilitary organization affiliated with the Republican Party in the election of 1860 (in which Abraham Lincoln was elected). The reel is similar to "Evansville Reel", "Ratcatcher's Reel", "Clem Titus Jig" and "Peggy Whiffle's Reel". It was printed in Cole's 1000 Fiddle Tunes (1940), Kennedy's Traditional Dance Music of Britain and Ireland: Reels and Rants (1997) and Ryan’s Mammoth Collection (1883). |
