"Boating Up Sandy", also known as "Boating Up Sandy" or "Gal with the Blue Dress On" is an
American reel in A Mixoldyian (Phillips) or A Dorian (Johnson). It is usually played as a
crooked tune with one part of 14 measures.
This tune is entirely different from both the contra-dance version and the American reel version of "The Girl With the Blue Dress On". The tune is a member of a tune family including "Hog Eye an' a 'Tater", "Hog Eye Man", "Granny Will Your Dog Bite?", "Sally in the Garden" and "Fire on the Mountain" (there are several tunes by this name; it is a "floater"). It was printed in Brody's Fiddler's Fakebook (1983), Johnson's The Kitchen Musician: Occasional Collection of Old-Timey Fiddle Tunes for Hammer Dulcimer, Fiddle, etc. (1982) (revised 1988 & 2003), Lamancusa's The Gettysburg Collection of Old-Time Fiddle Tunes (2021) and Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes, vol. 1 (1994). It was recorded by Delbert Hughes on The Home Recordings, Wilson Douglas on Brandywine 75: Music of West Virginia (1975), Wilson Douglas on Boatin' Up Sandy and The Hollow Rock String Band on The Hollow Rock String Band (1974). |
