"Cherry River Rag" is an old-time country rag. Apparently Ed Haley was the only one to record this tune (prior to John Hartford). It is named for the Cherry River, part of the Kanawha-New River basin of West Virginia. It was also recorded by John Hartford and Adam Hurt.
The tune is unusual in that it uses several high C notes. A shift to the second position on the violin will facilitate this tune.
It was printed in Stacy Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes and Favorite American Rags & Blues for Fiddle.
This is one of the post-ragtime "rags" that fiddlers and mandolin players developed in the early 20th century using the syncopated rhythms of the ragtime tradition.
Other rags/blues tunes in this collections are:
    "Colored Aristocracy"
    "Dora Dean"
    "L & N Rag"
    "Old Jackson Stomp"
    "Pig Ankle Rag"
    "Ragtime Annie"
- in the Tunes section
    "East Tennessee Blues"
    "Eli Green's Cakewalk"
    "Hawkin's Rag"
    "Sister Kate"
    "Stone's Rag"
    "Woody's Rag"
- in the Legacies section and
    "Horace Hanesworth"
- in the Songwriters section.
I learned it from Adam Hurt's recording.
