"L & N Rag", also known as "Sleeping Lulu", is an old-time country rag from Kentucky. It was recorded by Alex Hood and the Railroad Boys (1930) who came from Corbin, Kentucky, an eastern Kentucky railroad hub where many people worked for the lines, in this case the Louisville & Nashville (L &N) line. It was also recorded by another old-time group, Walker's Corbin Ramblers (mandolin player John Walker was a member of both groups). It was printed in Phillips' Traditional American Fiddle Tunes (1995), Lamancusa's The Gettysburg Collection of Old-Time Fiddle Tunes (2021) and Silberberg's Tunes I Learned at Tractor Tavern (2002). It was recorded by Bruce Molsky and Bob Carlin on Take Me as I Am (2004) Alex Hood and the Railroad Boys (78 RPM)(1930), Alex Hood & his Railroad Boys on Old Time String Band Classics, 1927-1933 (1975), The Lazy Aces on Still Lazy After All These Years (1986), and Adam Hurt on Insight (2006). This is one of the post-ragtime "rags" that fiddlers and mandolin players developed in the early 20th century using the syncopated rhythms of the ragtime tradition.
